Greatest mentors, inspire!

“Mediocre mentor tells, the good mentor explains, the superior mentor demonstrates,  the greatest mentors inspire!”, sebuah quote dari Lucia Ballas Trayor ini cukup menarik perhatian saya, dimana di kalimat tersebut tergambarkan ada perbedaan kualitas dari seorang mentor.

Pada hari Sabtu dan Minggu di Minggu ke-3 bulan Ramadhan saya mengikuti sebuah workshop yang sejak lama saya nantikan, yaitu workshop dari seorang trainer dan penulis terkenal, Pak Ongky Hojanto tentang Book Writing. Sebelumnya sudah beberapa workshop beliau yang saya pernah ikuti diantaranya adalah Sales Mastery, NLP Mastery, dan Trainerpreneur sehingga tidak asing lagi buat saya untuk mengikuti gaya mengajar beliau.

Banyak materi yang menarik yang diajarkan kepada kami di dalam kelas, bukan hanya tips dan trik atau kiat-kiat dalam menulis,  tetapi juga cara bagaimana kita membuat buku kita laris di pasaran.  “Ketika buku selesai ditulis, perjuangan Anda dimulai, ujarnya. ‘Perjuangan’ yang dimaksud di sini adalah bagaimana agar kita dapat menarik pembaca sebanyak-banyaknya dan me-maintain mereka agar dapat terus menjadi pembaca setia buku kita. 

Saya memutuskan untuk mengikuti workshop ini karena saya melihat bahwa keahlian menulis sangat dibutuhkan bagi para profesional atau siapa pun yang perlu untuk menuliskan ide-ide pemikiran, berbagi  pengetahuan yang dimiliki kepada orang lain sebagai bentuk karya, atau pun sebagai aktualisasi diri. Kebetulan, sudah satu tahun ini saya memulai menulis dan saya ingin mendapatkan pengetahuan lebih luas agar buku saya lebih baik.   

Tidak semua orang memiliki kemampuan menulis, bahkan saya pun begitu pada awalnya. Komunikasi secara tertulis sangatlah berbeda dengan komunikasi verbal sehingga untuk dapat menyampaikan pesan dengan baik, kita harus mengetahui tata cara atau aturannya. Walaupun saat ini kita memiliki teknologi yang canggih khususnya dalam bidang multimedia,  media berbentuk teks atau tulisan masih menjadi referensi bagi orang untuk membaca, belajar atau berbagi ilmu kepada orang lain.

Menulis memiliki manfaat yang sangat besar bukan hanya kepada pembaca tetapi juga kepada orang yang menulis. Mengapa demikian?  karena dengan menulis, kita dituntut untuk dapat mengerti materi atau betul-betul paham mengenai apa yang akan kita sampaikan.  Kita dituntut untuk dapat memiliki wawasan lebih luas, salah satunya adalah dengan membaca lebih banyak buku. Menurut data dari National Training Laboratories, Bethel Maine tentang rata-rata tingkat retensi setelah 24 jam orang belajar, dengan mengajarkan orang lain (salah satunya dengan menulis) kita akan mendapatkan manfaat yang paling tinggi, yaitu 95% (selain dengan belajar mengandalkan kuliah di classroom 5%, dengan audio visual 20%, dengan demonstrasi 30% atau praktek 75%).

Selain membahas teknis menulis, Pak Ongky juga memberikan gambaran mengenai gaya gaya tulisan dari para penulis terkenal. Beliau memperlihatkan buku-buku karya dari Rhenald Khasali yang kaya akan data dan kisah-kisah, Joe Vitale yang penuh dengan kumpulan artikel-artikel terpisah yang digabung menjadi satu buku, Robert Kiyosaki, dengan gayanya terus menerus membahas konsep ESBI nya, Hermawan Kertajaya yang juga bercerita tentang kisah-kisah pengalaman nya di hampir semua bab, Tung Desem Waringin yang penuh akan tips-tips, John C Maxwell dan masih banyak lagi.  Dari contoh tersebut saya jadi lebih sadar sekaligus memahami akan gaya tulisan yang menjadi karakter seorang penulis.

Pak Ongky kemudian mengajarkan metode atau teknik bagaimana kita dapat merasa mudah untuk mendapatkan ide dalam menulis. Di sesi ini benar-benar terbuka wawasan saya ternyata untuk mendapatkan ide menulis bisa dari mana saja. Kita tinggal memilih apa yang pas dengan kita. Bahkan saya sempat berfikir bahwa teknik tersebut juga bisa cocok dengan kebutuhan musisi dalam mencari inspirasi membuat sebuah lagu.

Seperti quote di awal tulisan, dengan bimbingan mentor yang hebat, kita bukan hanya mendapatkan ketrampilan baru, tetapi juga inspirasi. Berbekal wawasan dan pengetahuan yang diberikan dalam workshop ini saya berharap dapat lebih mudah untuk menulis dan berbagi pengalaman. Mari kita budayakan berbagi ilmu dengan menulis, karena manfaatnya sangat luas yaitu diantaranya adalah kita dapat lebih mengenali kemampuan dan potensi diri, melatih kita  dalam bernalar, memperluas wawasan bahkan memperluas jaringan pertemanan.
