Saya memiliki putri yang sudah beranjak dewasa, bernama Nikkei. Saya dan istri memberi nama Nikkei karena pada saat kami bekerja di dalam dealing room di perusahaan sekuritas, kata-kata yang terucap sehari-hari adalah nama index saham di Tokyo yang terdiri dari saham-saham perusaan besar di Jepang. Satu bulan lagi, Nikkei akan melanjutkan studi di sebuah Universitas Negeri di kota Bandung.

Saat sore hari sebelum meeting, saya mengajak Nikkei. “Saya ingin ditemani kamu, kei. Kan kamu bisa sketching ilustrasi atau gambar ketika kita meeting”, ujar saya dan Nikkei setuju untuk ikut. Sejak duduk di bangku Sekolah Dasar Nikkei sangat gemar menggambar.

Di perjalanan saat berkendara, saya mengisi waktu dengan berdiskusi dengan Nikkei mengenai masa depannya. Apa saja yang menjadi cita-cita, planning nya dan bagaimana itu dapat terlaksana. [Visi, misi, strategy, action plan]. Selain itu kami juga berdiskusi mengenai skill development Nikkei dalam hal entrepreneurship dan investasi. “Kei, jika saja pada saat seusia mu saya sudah memiliki seorang mentor, saya tidak bisa membayangkan bagaimana jadinya saya sekarang. Begitu banyak hal yang dapat saya hemat, bukan saja biaya, tetapi juga tenaga dan waktu. Begitu banyak keinginan dan cita-cita saya dapat tercapai”, ujar saya berandai-andai.     

Sejak saya belajar di Sekolah Menengah di Jakarta, orang tua tinggal dan bekerja di Surabaya hingga tahun ketiga saya duduk di bangku kuliah (di Jakarta). Pada saat itu, media komunikasi belum canggih seperti sekarang. Internet belum ada dan biaya telepon cukup mahal (interlokal). Komunikasi saya dengan ayah (my mentor) terjalin hanya pada saat kita bertemu muka. Itupun paling cepat tiga hingga enam bulan sekali.

Di kampus, saya mendapatkan lingkungan sosial yang baik. Teman-teman kuliah  dan lingkungan kampus sangat mendukung studi. Hampir semua fasilitas tersedia. Dari perpustakaan hingga laboratorium. Ada satu yang saya lewatkan. Di Jakarta saya tidak memiliki seorang mentor, sehingga apa yang saya lakukan adalah trial and error. Memang betul saya memiliki teman-teman yang banyak memberikan saya masukan tetapi, it was different. Mentor adalah seseorang yang memiliki pengalaman dan bisa membimbing kita untuk dapat mencapai cita-cita yang kita inginkan.

Dalam pengalaman saya bekerja, memang ada beberapa orang yang benar – benar membimbing saya walau pada umumnya, saya ’dilepas‘ begitu saja untuk dapat ’belajar sendiri‘. Seorang expatriate dari Singapore yang kini menjadi teman sosial media saya adalah salah satu mentor yang saya ingat. Most of IT project management knowledge saya dapatkan dari beliau. Di Komunitas musik, saya juga pernah mendapatkan mentoring yang efektif dalam producing sebuah karya musik oleh seorang tokoh yang saya kagumi.

Ketika saya memutuskan untuk terjun ke wirausaha, saya harus melakukan semua nya tanpa bimbingan seorang mentor. Ini yang saya anggap adalah salah satu cost terbesar dalam pembelajaran hidup saya.

Nikkei adalah pendengar yang baik, sekaligus teman diskusi yang kritis. Kapanpun saya bercerita mengenai sebuah topik, dia selalu memiliki antusiasme untuk mengetahui lebih jauh. Semakin banyak bertanya, semakin bersemangat saya menjelaskan. Saya tidak ingin kejadian yang saya alami juga terjadi padanya. Dia harus memiliki seorang mentor, dan saya harus selalu siap hadir untuknya.

Di dalam dunia kerja atau karir, mentoring juga sangat penting perannya dalam people development dan knowledge management. Ada beberapa manfaat dari mentoring yang didapat di tempat kerja antara lain:

Keuntungan yang didapat dari karyawan yang diberikan mentoring (mentee):
1.    Kompetensi dan skill karyawan akan terbangun seberjalannya waktu.
2.    Percaya diri akan tumbuh sehingga berpotensi untuk meningkatkan kemampuannya dalam melaksanakan tugas.
3.    Communicatiaon skill akan tumbuh
4.    Berlatih menerima feedback (kritikan atau masukan). Dengan terbiasa untuk mendengar masukan dari orang lain, kedewasaan akan tumbuh.
5.    Berlatih membangun hubungan professional
6.    Mendapatkan ‘resep rahasia’ untuk sukses di dalam pekerjaan
7.    Menghemat waktu, tenaga dan pikiran dalam proses pembelajaran

Adapun keuntungan yang didapat dari seorang mentor adalah
1.    Listening skill dari seorang mentor akan tumbuh dan terasah seberjalannya waktu.
2.    Membangun rasa kepuasan dalam membina anggota tim atau bawahan.
3.    Relationship building skill akan tumbuh
4.    Membangun rasa pencapaian dalam tujuan atau achievement drive.

Dalam proses mentoring, bukan hanya mentor dan mentee yang mendapatkan manfaat, perusahaan pun akan mendapat manfaat yang positif, yaitu
1.    Terbangun nya leadership yang baik di dalam organisasi atau perusahaan adalah maanfaat yang luar biasa besar impactnya bagi produktifitas.
2.    Karyawan akan mendapatkan rasa ‘sense of belonging’ kepada perusahaan dan itu akan berdampak kepada rendahnya turn over karyawan
3.     Program talent development dan succession planning di perusahaan akan berjalan mulus.
4.    Terbangunnya empolyers branding. Calon karyawan akan melihat bahwa perusahaan adalah tempat yang sangat baik, karena kesempatan untuk belajar sangat terbuka.
